Causes and Evaluation of ACL Injury

New York (USA), June 19, 2013

Causes of ACL Injury

Ligaments are tissue bands connecting bones. ACL or anterior cruciate ligament is one of the two ligaments crisscrossing your knee joint. It stabilizes knee joint and connects femur or thighbone to tibia or shinbone.

Causes for ACL injuries include:

1. Suddenly stopping while running

2. Fast and sudden change in direction

3. Suddenly slowing down while running

4. Incorrect landing posture or inadvertently turning or twisting knee during landing causes ACL injury. Sometimes you land flat on your heels. This creates a direct impact of force upwards from tibia to your knee. However, knee is in a straight position. The sudden impact forces knee into a forward position. This sudden impact and change of direction injures ACL.

5. Direct collision of knees with another person with a heavy impact as in case of a motor vehicle accident or during playing football injures ACL.

Evaluation of ACL Injury

ACL injuries are graded according to their severity.

1. A mild damage to ligament due to stretching is Grade 1 Sprain. However, it is still able to support knee joint.

2. Extensive stretching of ligament such that it becomes loose is Grade 2 Sprain. It is also known as partial tear of ligament.

3. Ligament tears into two pieces and knee joint becomes unstable. This is Grade 3 Sprain.

Most ACL injuries are complete tears or sprains.
