ACL Injury: Home Remedies

You can treat ACL injuries at home, if pain is not very acute. Further, if you choose to adopt non-surgical methods to treat your ACL injuries, simple home treatments go a long way in providing relief from pain.

Home treatments include:

1. As soon as you experience pain and swelling in knee, stop all activities. Rest your knee. If pain is very acute and even taking a few steps is difficult, use crutches until you are able to visit your doctor. However, do not use crutches for very long periods, as total inactivity of knee would cause muscle tissue to waste away. This proves to be more debilitating.

2. Wrap ice or a bag of frozen peas in a towel and put it on your aching knee. Do it three times in a day for around twenty minutes.

3. Keep your knee elevated during ice compress or even otherwise while sitting or lying down.

4. Use an elastic bandage to wrap knee tightly. This reduces fluid in knee. Pain is reduced and you are able to move freely. However, do not wrap very tightly as this leads to swelling. If knee pain increases, you feel a tingling sensation, if foot becomes numb and cool, it indicates bandage is very tight and should be loosened.
