Signs and Symptoms of an ACL Tear

Popping Sound: As soon as an ACL tear occurs, a popping sound at the knee is heard and felt. The sound is quite loud and people around you can hear it. If tear is minor, you continue with your work although you feel slight pain. You also feel a sudden shift in knee joint.

Swelling and Pain: Within minutes of popping sound and associated knee injury, pain and swelling start rapidly. Blood vessels in ligament of knee tear due to the impact. Swelling occurs as knee joint is filled with blood (hemarthrosis). Swelling starts fast and continues to spread rapidly. Pain is also immediate although intensity depends on extent of injury. Swelling worsens with time.

Instability of Knee: Knee joint gives away due to the impact of ACL injury. You feel your knee slipping backwards. You are unable to control direction and movement of your leg. Knee turns stiff.

Discomfort While Walking: If it is a minor tear of ACL, you feel unstable while walking. Tenderness along the joint line makes you feel uncomfortable. In case of a complete tear, there is total loss of range of motion of knee.

If ACL injury is not taken care of immediately, it could lead to severe damage to cartilage. Sometimes it increases your chances of developing osteoarthritis later in life.
