AIDS – Prevention and Coping

AIDS Prevention

There is no preventive vaccine for HIV. However, it is possible to prevent AIDS to a great extent. Measures include:

1. Use fresh condoms every time. Women can use female condom. Use water-based lubricants as oil-based lubricants weaken and break condoms.

2. Use dental dam, condom, or plastic wrap during oral sex.

3. Inform your sexual partners of your HIV-positive status.

4. If you use drugs, go for clean and sterile needles. Needle-exchange programs reduce infections by drug abuse.

5. If you are HIV-positive and pregnant, seek medical help immediately. This can significantly reduce chances of infection passing to your baby. Opt for caesarean section delivery. Do not breast-feed your baby.

6. Sex education in schools can prevent AIDS from turning endemic.

7. Pre-exposure prophylaxis with regular medications is effective.

Coping with AIDS

It is extremely shattering when you receive AIDS diagnosis. Emotional, social, and financial consequences of the diagnosis and consequent treatment can be very difficult. It affects you, your relatives, and friends. Seek help of trained and professional counselors and social workers to tackle all difficulties. Most AIDS/HIV clinics have numerous social support groups, social workers, and nurses who help you with employment and legal issues, attending doctor appointments, and financial difficulties.

It depends on your individual perception to handle this sensitive issue. Some seek solace in religious faiths while some aspire to experience life as fully as possible.
