AIDS – Clinical Trials and Research Studies

HIV is amongst the most researched and tested viruses in medical history. Clinical tests and trials have identified proteins, genes, and functioning of HIV strain. A search for effective vaccine has been on ever since HIV was identified.

Recent research indicates a vulnerable spot on outer shell of HIV, position 332. A type of sugar, glycan, on this spot prompts your body to use neutralizing antibodies to counter attack infection. These antibodies can help create an effective AIDS vaccine, as presently there is no vaccine for AIDS.

HAART therapy reduces functioning of HIV virus but does not offer any permanent cure. HIV continues to be present in your body albeit at low levels. The main problem in detecting correct cure for AIDS is because HIV can hide in specific areas of your body like brain where virus remains stored. Drugs cannot reach such places. Often, virus remains dormant and non-reproductive as long as you are under medication. Once you stop medication, virus reactivates.

Stem cell transplantation does not offer any sure cure. Mortality risk is high and finding compatible donors is difficult. Researchers have come up with an enzyme to destroy protein gp120 CD4 binding site. This protein occurs across all HIV variants. B-lymphocytes attach to this protein and start damaging your body immune system. Combination of anti-retrovirals with drugs can help eradicate AIDS.
