AIDS – Definition and Diagnosis

Definition of AIDS

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or AIDS is a disease of the human immune system caused by human immunodeficiency virus or HIV. Research indicates that HIV first originated in west-central Africa in late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognized AIDS in 1981. AIDS exists across the globe and it is fast spreading.

When you first contract the infection, you suffer influenza-like illness for a brief period. Thereafter you do not have any symptoms at all. Slowly your body loses its immunity ability and you remain prone to frequent infections and tumors that do not normally affect people with a strong immune system.

Diagnosis of AIDS

AIDS is a chronic condition. HIV destroys your body immune system and your body is unable to fight away organisms that cause diseases.

HIV virus is found in body fluids like vaginal fluids, semen, breast milk, and blood of infected person. Virus passes either through sexual contact like oral sex, vaginal sex, anal sex, through blood transfusion, or through contaminated hypodermic needles. Infected women can pass on infection to their children during childbirth or through breast-feeding. Saliva and tears do not transmit HIV. There is no cure or vaccine for AIDS.

There are various misconceptions regarding AIDS. It has a huge social and economic impact and often acts as the source of discrimination in society. Numerous controversies rage around AIDS.
