ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurobehavioral disorder that occurs in early childhood. This is same as attention deficit disorder or ADD. This disorder is four times more prevalent in boys than in girls. Characteristic symptoms of ADHD include hyperactivity, difficulty in sustaining attention, and impulsive behavior. This problem starts in early childhood and often continues into adulthood. Some children outgrow their symptoms and become normal as they grow.

ADHD is the most common psychiatric disorder in young children. It affects around five percent of children across the world. Some children carrying forward this disorder into adolescence learn several coping strategies and are able to manage all situations.

ADHD diagnosis is normally through assimilation of your child’s behavioral information collected from caregivers like you, your child’s school, and others closely associated with your child. Your doctor collects details of child’s medical history, duration of symptoms, and about how the behavior affects your child and others. Doctor also analyzes your child’s medical health to determine if symptoms are due to any other ailment.

It is very difficult to diagnose ADHD in children less than five years of age. Some show ADHD symptoms but soon outgrow them while some show such symptoms only in specific situations. Early diagnosis and proper treatment is important. This helps your child evolve better and move ahead in life.
