New York (USA), June 30, 2013

ADHD in Children: Complications

1. Children with ADHD are more accident-prone. They get injured more often than other children.

2. ADHD children are unable to grasp and assimilate as much as normal children in classroom. This leads to poor academic performance and low self-esteem.

3. Other children do not find ADHD children as normal as themselves and often do not interact much with them.

4. As they grow, few ADHD children develop criminal tendencies and take to liquor and drugs.

ADHD in Children: Risk Factors

Family History: If any member of your family has ADHD or other mental disorders, it is possible for children to develop it. It is common for siblings and parents to have ADHD. This is the predominant risk factor for ADHD.

Gender: Incidence is higher in boys than in girls. However, many are of the opinion that it remains undiagnosed in girls.

Environmental Factors: Children of women with smoking and drinking habits during pregnancy often develop ADHD. Increased exposure to environmental lead as found in pipes and paint of old buildings and polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs within six years of age could lead to ADHD in children.

Dietary Factors: There is no clear medical evidence of any relation between specific food and ADHD. However, deficiencies of zinc, fatty acids, and sugar sensitivity could lead to ADHD.

Premature Birth: Children born before completion of gestation period develop ADHD.
