Airplane Ear – Diagnostic Tests and Procedures

The most common symptom or indication of airplane ear is a bulge of the eardrum. The bulge could be inward or outward. Doctor asks you varied questions to analyze your situation. Thereafter doctor physically examines your ear using an otoscope. If you have severe airplane ear, physical examination reveals pooling of fluids or blood in eardrum or a tear in eardrum.

If you feel dizzy or experience a spinning sensation as in vertigo, it could be due to structural damage of inner ear. Your doctor would advise a hearing test or audiometry to identify extent of injury. This test also detects how well you are able to hear sounds and whether you suffer from any problems of innermost ear.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Before visiting your ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist or otolaryngologist, list out all your symptoms. Write down all questions and doubts you would like to ask your doctor. Also, list out any medications like vitamin supplements or painkillers you are currently taking. Detail any self-care medications you have been taking to alleviate pain or other symptoms. Your doctor could ask you questions like since when you have been experiencing airplane ear, whether it reoccurs often, whether you are a frequent flyer, and so on.

If you are in severe pain, take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like analgesic pain reliever as in acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or naproxen (Aleve, others).
