Airplane Ear – Prevention and Coping

Preventive Strategies for Airplane Ear

Preventive strategies of airplane ear include:

1. If you are suffering from sinus infection, cold, or any other nasal allergy, postpone your flight travel plans.

2. If you have had ear surgery in the recent past, seek your doctor’s advice on when is it safe to travel by air.

3. Use decongestant nasal sprays or pills half an hour before your flight. Restrict usage of such sprays as they could increase congestion. Elderly and pregnant women should seek medical advice before taking decongestants as they cause many side effects. Avoid decongestants for young children.

4. Remain well hydrated by drinking lots of water. This improves functioning of eustachian tubes, as nasal passages and throat are free of irritation.

5. Do not drink caffeine or alcohol. These constrict blood vessels leading to ruptured capillaries.

6. Give a pacifier to children and infants to encourage frequent swallowing and thereby prevent airplane ear.

7. Seek medical advice to use eardrop for infants or children. This could act as a pain reliever and numbing agent.

8. Swallowing and yawning during flight activates muscles that open your eustachian tubes.

Coping Strategies for Airplane Ear

If you have to fly frequently and suffer from airplane ear, your doctor would help fluid drainage by surgically placing tubes in your eardrums. This ventilates middle ear and equalizes air pressure between middle and outer ear.
