Airplane Ear – Home Remedies and Alternative Therapies

Simple home remedies and alternative therapies for airplane ear include:

1. Suck a candy or chew gum during flight specifically during take-off and landing. Drink water or juice using a straw. Give infants a bottle to suck on. Sucking movement keeps eustachian tube open. Fluids restrict pain or discomfort of airplane ear.

2. Have an oral decongestant half an hour before your flight takes off. Decongestant prevents eustachian tube obstruction. If you suffer from any heart ailments or high blood pressure, do not take decongestants. Although decongestants are available as over the counter medications, consult your doctor before using them. Common side effects of decongestants include dizziness and drowsiness.

3. Avoid sleeping during your flight.

4. If you are not comfortable with medications, use earplugs to ease discomfort due to airplane ear. Earplugs are available across different sizes and some are specifically made for air travel.

5. If you suffer from pain due to airplane ear during flight, take pain-relievers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

6. If you suddenly suffer from pain due to airplane ear during flight, pinch your nose, close your mouth, and take a deep breath and blow your nose to push out air through your ears. This would cause a small popping sound when eustachian tube opens. Repeat many times until airplane ear symptoms subside. This equalizes air pressure within ears and the environment.
