Airplane Ear – Treatments and Medications

Normally airplane ear pain subsides within little time. Nonetheless, if pain does not subside or if you suffer from frequent bouts of airplane ear, you should seek appropriate medical treatment. Airplane ear pain is primarily due to changes in air pressure levels in environment and within your ear. It does not affect everyone. Some remain absolutely symptom-free while some suffer extreme agony and pain due to airplane ear.

Medications for Airplane Ear

Medications help alleviate most symptoms of airplane ear like pain and congestion. Common medications include:

1. Use oral decongestant or antihistamine available as over the counter medication. Since airplane ear causes congestion, use these medications to clear your ear and nasal cavity.

2. Use nasal decongestants to spray into your nose as soon as you start feeling uncomfortable. Spray around four times in each nostril and inhale decongestant.

3. If you suffer from any severe ear infections, seek medical advice for antibiotics. This prevents severe ear pain due to infection.

4. A mild pain reliever like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), or analgesic pain reliever like acetaminophen (Tylenol) helps relieve pain.

Surgery Treatment of Airplane Ear

Surgical treatment of airplane ear is rare. If antibiotics and other medications do not help alleviate or do away with airplane ear pain, your doctor suggests surgery. Doctor cuts or makes an incision into your eardrum to clear fluid accumulation. Thereafter doctor inserts tubes to improve drainage and equalize pressure between outer and middle ears. This is myringotomy. Ruptured eardrum or ruptured membranes of inner ear normally heal on their own. In very few cases, surgical intervention proves essential.

Doctors also suggest a self-care technique in addition to medications for airplane ear. This self-care technique is Valsalva maneuver. You close your nostrils tightly using your fingers, similar to pinching your nose. Close your mouth and force air to the back of your nose gently, as if you are blowing your nose. This improves functioning of eustachian tubes. Sometimes, Valsalva maneuver forces open eustachian tubes. Doctors advise you to practise this technique while you are on medications for air plane ear.
