What is Acute Febrile Neutrophilic Dermatosis?

Definition of Acute Febrile Neutrophilic Dermatosis

Acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis is a rare skin disease. Characteristic symptoms include painful skin lesions on neck, arms, face, and back, fever, and peripheral neutrophilia. Dr. Robert Douglas Sweet was the first to diagnose this disease in two of his patients, Gomm and Button. Hence, acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis is also known as Sweet’s syndrome or SS and Gomm-Button disease in honor of the two patients.

Diagnosis of Acute Febrile Neutrophilic Dermatosis

In 1964, Dr. Robert Douglas Sweet described a skin disease that had four characteristic features. These were acute, tender, red plaques, leukocytosis, fever, and papillary dermal infiltrate of neutrophils. This was termed acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis. However, fever and neutrophilia were not present in every patient. There is no specific cause for this disease. It normally occurs in young women as a follow-up after mild respiratory discomfort or any infection or illness. In some, it starts as an aggressive outburst of neutrophilia. Lesions can be treated with corticosteroids like prednisone or other medications and they heal without any scarring.

Symptoms persist for many weeks and months if you do not seek any medical treatments. However, chances of reoccurrence of Sweet’s syndrome are high and common. In very rare cases, lesions do not disappear and remain forever. Some lesions are malignant or acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis occurs with cancer. These lesions do not normally respond to treatment.
