Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Signs and Symptoms

Acute respiratory distress syndrome symptoms set in suddenly, rather within 48 to 72 hours after specific triggers like trauma, injury, massive blood transfusion, infectious pneumonia, drug or alcohol abuse, acute pancreatitis, sepsis, burns or aspiration. Normally people encountering acute respiratory distress syndrome are already hospitalized due to their injuries or ailments. They are so sick that they cannot complain of symptoms. Symptoms vary in intensity depending on cause and its severity.

Signs and symptoms of acute respiratory distress syndrome include:

– Rapid and difficult breathing
– Low blood pressure leading to multi-organ failure
– Breathlessness is due to poor supply of oxygen from lungs to into blood. You feel suffocated and gasp for breath.
– Extensive fatigue
– Fever
– Mental confusion
– Anxiety
– Agitation
– Abnormal heart rhythms
– Chest pain

Specific ratio of pulmonary artery wedge pressure or PaO2:FiO2 should be maintained between inspired oxygen level and oxygen present in the blood. If this ratio of inspired oxygen entering blood is low, you suffer serious symptoms of acute respiratory distress syndrome. If PaO2:FiO2 is less than 300 mmHg, it indicates lung injury. If this falls down to less than 200mmHg, it indicates, you have acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a medical emergency. Such extensive loss of blood can cause death if immediate medical attention is not available. Acute respiratory distress syndrome affects your lungs seriously; however, it is not due to heart failure.
