Causes and Evaluation of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

New York (USA), June 27, 2013

Lungs contain a network of alveoli and blood vessels. Normally, a protective membrane restricts fluid with these from flowing out. Sometimes, a traumatic injury or illness causes inflammation and tears this protective membrane. Fluid from numerous miniscule blood vessels that transverse your lungs leaks into air sacs where blood is oxygenated. This leads to acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Causes of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Causes of acute respiratory distress syndrome include:

Sepsis: Extensive infection of bloodstream due to pathogenic microorganisms or their toxins is the most common cause of acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Pneumonia: If bacterial, viral, or fungal pneumonia affects all five lobes of your lungs, it could lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Harmful Substances: When you breathe in chemical fumes or thick smoke, you inhale various harmful substances. These lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Injuries: Severe accidents like bleeding from car crashes, fractures, injuries to head or chest, drowning, or falls often injure your lungs. Some affect functioning of your brain leading to trauma. These cause breathing problems.

Drug Overdose: If you have an overdose of drugs, your lungs suffer from breathlessness leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Ailments: Serious ailments like acute pancreatitis, breathing in stomach contents while throwing up, having many blood transfusions, or heart-lung bypass cause acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Evaluation of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Although such causes are often the main reason behind acute respiratory distress syndrome, many people with such causes do not develop acute respiratory distress syndrome while some develop it without any such cause.
