Acute Coronary Syndrome: Complications and Risk Factors

Risk factors of Acute Coronary Syndrome include:

Age: Risk increases with age. Men over forty-five and women over fifty-five are at a high risk of ACS. Men suffer from heart ailments earlier in life than women.

Gender: Men in their middle age are more prone to ACS than middle-aged women are. Women are at a higher risk of ACS after menopause. Further, menopausal women stand a greater chance of angina than men do.

High Cholesterol and Triglycerides: High cholesterol and high triglycerides block arteries leading to ACS.

Sedentary Lifestyle: Absence of regular physical activity leads to ACS. If you lead a sedentary life, you are twice more risky to develop ACS than those who exercise regularly.

High Blood Pressure: Normal blood pressure levels are 120/80. If your blood pressure is higher, you are at a risk of ACS.

Cigarette Smoking: This is an extremely risky factor causing ACS.

Genetic Factors: If close members of your family suffer from any heart ailments, you are at a higher risk of developing similar ailments and ACS than others. If your family members suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, you could also develop these. Such diseases often prompt ACS.

Race and Ethnicity: African-Americans have the highest risk of ACS due to their obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
