What is Acute Coronary Syndrome?

Definition of Acute Coronary Syndrome

Acute coronary syndrome is specific condition caused by sudden reduction in blood flow to coronary arteries due to obstruction in arteries. This situation normally occurs in a hospital. It is an emergency and requires immediate medical attention. Acute coronary syndrome includes heart attack and unstable angina.

Coronary arteries supply oxygenated blood to the heart. When these arteries are blocked, blood flow is restricted and heart does not receive sufficient blood. Oxygen supply is also thereby restricted. This leads to a heart attack or angina. Slowly parts of your heart start dying due to lack of oxygen and blood. This is a serious medical condition. Early diagnosis can treat acute coronary syndrome successfully.

Diagnosis of Acute Coronary Syndrome

Diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome is through electrocardiogram. This test measures electrical signals controlling your heart’s rhythm. Signals are recorded and the graph indicates whether your heart is receiving sufficient blood or not.

ACS happens due to:
– Unstable angina or
– ST elevation myocardial infarction or
– Non ST elevation myocardial infarction

Unstable angina can occur suddenly even when you are resting or with very little exertion. Sometimes, acute coronary syndrome or ACS is due to cocaine use. Anemia, very fast heart rate (tachycardias), or very slow heart rate (bradycardias) amplifies chest pain. Chest pain starting from left arm accompanied with sweating and nausea are the most common symptoms of ACS.
