What is Acoustic Neuroma?

Definition of Acoustic Neuroma

An acoustic neuroma is a benign but slow-growing tumor of vestibular cochlear nerve. This is same as vestibular schwannoma. The tumor develops on the nerve that connects your inner ear to your brain. The neuroma starts from overgrowth of Schwann cells from sheath. These cells envelope vestibular nerve and hence it is termed as vestibular schwannoma.

Acoustic neuroma does not spread, as it is non-cancerous. It hardly grows. Nonetheless, sometimes it grows very fast and becomes big enough to press against the brain. This affects functioning of brain and consequently functions of other body parts controlled by your brain also are affected. Your body balance and hearing is affected. There is a ringing noise in your ear.

Diagnosis of Acoustic Neuroma

It could be difficult to diagnose acoustic neuroma. The tumor is very small and symptoms develop only much later. Further, most symptoms are common to those of middle ear problems. However, CT scan, MRI tests, and other ear examinations can diagnose acoustic neuroma. Acoustic neuroma is not referred to as a serious medical condition. The tumor by itself does not affect the brain. Yet, a perpetually growing tumor does press along the brain and other important cranial nerves. These nerves help in the functioning of facial muscles. An overgrown tumor can prove fatal if it presses against cerebellum as it paralyzes your face. It also affects brain adversely.
