<p>Typical signs and symptoms of adhesive capsulitis include pain, stiffness, and a feeling of tightness in shoulder joint disrupting easy movement of shoulder and arm. External rotation of the shoulder is severely inhibited.</p>
<p>Pain starts as a dull pricking pain and develops into a constant numbing pain. Pain increases if you accidentally bump your shoulder or even try any simple movement like raising your arm. Pain normally escalates at night and in cold weather. It disturbs your sleep pattern at night and leads to extreme exhaustion.</p>
<p>Adhesive capsulitis pain progresses slowly in three defined stages with each stage spread over a number of months. These stages include:</p>
<p><strong>First Stage:</strong> This is the most painful stage. Pain starts slowly and thereafter manifests as severe pain. It occurs with any slight movement of shoulder. Range of motion of shoulder is extremely limited with increase in pain. This stage extends from six weeks to nine months.</p>
<p><strong>Second Stage:</strong> Your shoulder becomes stiffer and range of motion decreases still more. Although pain starts diminishing, it still exists. This is frozen or adhesive stage. This stage normally extends from four to nine months.</p>
<p><strong>Third Stage:</strong> In this stage, range of motion of your shoulder starts improving, close to normalcy. This is ideally termed ‘thawing or recovery stage’. It lasts anywhere from five to twenty-six months.</p>
