<p>The main cause behind adhesive capsulitis is thickening of shoulder capsule. Ligaments, bones, and tendons constituting your shoulder joint are encompassed within a capsule of connective tissue. Any injury to shoulder like rotator cuff injury, bursitis, or tendinitis is responsible for scarring, thickening, inflammation, and shrinkage of shoulder capsule. Capsule tightens around your shoulder joint and thereby shoulder movement is restricted.</p>
<p>The main cause behind adhesive capsulitis is not clear. However, few possible causes include:</p>
<p>1. Medical conditions like hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, diabetes, breast surgery, cardiac surgery or disease, inflammatory arthritis of shoulder, and Parkinson’s disease. High sugar levels as present in diabetics’ affects cell collagen and its functioning. It also damages blood cells and restricts normal blood circulation in your body. This affects elasticity of muscles and joints.</p>
<p>2. Physical trauma like carrying heavy bags slung over the shoulder or carrying heavy objects in your hands regularly</p>
<p>3. Hormonal changes occurring during perimenopause in women between the ages of 40 and 60 years</p>
<p>4. Surgery or injury to shoulder as in arm cast or any shoulder operation</p>
<p><strong>Evaluation of Adhesive Capsulitis</strong></p>
<p>Adhesive capsulitis occurs due to restriction of movement of shoulder joint. Ball and socket joint of shoulder contracts and tissue scars and swells. There is no space for free movement of shoulder joint and you feel as if your shoulder is locked. This is frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis.</p>
