Acute Kidney Failure: Signs and Symptoms

Acute kidney failure is sometimes without any symptoms. It is then detected through tests done for some other ailment. Common signs and symptoms of acute kidney failure include:

– Fluid retention leading to swelling in ankles, legs, or feet
– Decreased sensation in hands and feet
– Chest pain or pressure
– Drowsiness
– Decreased appetite
– Bloody stools
– Bleeding from nose
– Breathlessness
– Metallic taste in mouth
– Fatigue
– Prolonged nausea and vomiting
– High blood pressure
– Confusion
– Seizures or coma
– Pain in the area between hips and ribs
– Urination changes like excessive urination at night, very little urination, or complete cessation of urination
– Persistent hiccups
– Hand tremors
– Getting bruised easily
– Prolonged bleeding
– Slow, sluggish movements

These symptoms occur due to factors that disrupt normal kidney functioning. Headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite are due to accumulation of urea and other nitrogen-containing substances in blood. Pain in the area between ribs and hips (flanks) is due to stretching of fibrous tissue capsule surrounding the kidney. This leads to thrombosis of renal blood vessels or inflammation of kidney. Physical examination can detect other causes for kidney malfunctioning like palpable bladder, peripheral edema, rash in interstitial nephritis, pulmonary edema, and similar more. However, hypertension is a very rare occurrence due to acute kidney failure.
