The other name that is little known is <em>P. protopunica Balf</em> is mainly unique to the island of Socotra.</p>
<p>Though pomegranate has a rich ancient background, it has just some few commonly recognised dialect names. In India, it has several regional names in India. Most of these names are actually variations of Sanskrit words, such as <em>dadima</em> or <em>dalim</em>. In Hindi, it is called <em>anaar</em> and in the Persian, <em>dulim</em> or <em>dulima</em>.</p>
<p>The Spanish call the fruit as <em>granada</em> and the plant as <em>granado</em>. The Germans call it <em>granatapfel</em> and the Dutch <em>granaatappel</em>. Among the Italians, it is known as <em>melogranato, pomo granato, melograno granato</em> or <em>pomo punico</em>.</p>
<p>In Indonesia, pomegranate is known as <em>gangsalan</em>; while in Malaya, people call it <em>delima </em>and in Thailand,<em> tab tim</em>. In Brazilians, Pomegranate is known as <em>roma, romazeira</em> or <em>romeira</em>.</p>
<p>The Quecchi Indian name in Guatemala is <em>granad</em>. In Samoan, the name is <em>limoni</em>. The generic term, <em>punica</em>, was the Roman name for Carthage from where the best pomegranates arrived to Italy.</p>
