Definition of Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is a type of anxiety disorder where you avoid situations that cause you panic or where you feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. Normally people with agoraphobia avoid crowded places like supermarkets, social gatherings, meetings, standing in a queue, or traveling. You also avoid being alone or in specific situation where you would feel helpless if you panic.

Normally agoraphobia remains unreported or undetected as you find ways of avoiding situations that cause you panic. Although researchers estimate agoraphobia occurs in around 1% to 7% of the population, it could be an underestimate, as many cases remain unreported and undiagnosed.

Often people confuse agoraphobia to be a fear of open spaces. It is not a fear of open spaces; rather, it is a fear of being in a place or situation where you feel helpless or embarrassed. This could happen even within your home. You feel anxious in unfamiliar places, or at locations where you have little control. Fearing panic attacks, you tend to avoid such places. Sometimes you do not venture out of your comfort zone, whether it is your home or the company of some specific person even in medical emergencies.

Agoraphobia starts from extreme anxiety situation. You fear doing anything or going anywhere. Even after such panic attacks subside, you feel stressed and you remain tense or scared of developing similar attacks. You are hardly ever calm or composed.
