<p>Complications due to acute radiation syndrome are many and far-reaching. Some occur and are visible soon after exposure while some remain latent and surface after many years or even get transferred to next generations.</p>
<p>Radiation damages cells and leads to death of cells. When you undergo radiation treatment for tumors or cancers, radiation therapy kills these cells. However, while killing tumor or cancerous cells, few healthy cells also get damaged. Technological advances help restrict such damage appreciably.</p>
<p>Similarly acute radiation syndrome occurring due to extensive radiation exposure causes damage corresponding to dose rate of exposure, total amount of energy absorbed, and total time of absorption. Normally, healthy cells can repair damage caused by small doses of radiation.</p>
