<p>Acute radiation sickness is due to exposure to high levels of radiation. Sources of high-level radiation include:</p>
<p>&#8211; Attack on nuclear industrial facility<br />
&#8211; Accident at nuclear industrial facility<br />
&#8211; Detonation of a standard nuclear weapon<br />
&#8211; Detonation of a small radioactive device<br />
&#8211; Detonation of conventional explosive device containing radioactive material<br />
&#8211; Exposure to excessive radiation for medical treatments</p>
<p>Radiation from atoms could be through a small particle of matter or as a wave. Radiation is of two main types:</p>
<p><strong>1. Penetrating or Ionizing Radiation:</strong> As the name suggests, radiation probes deep within your body, damages, and kills body cells.</p>
<p><strong>2. Non-Penetrating or Non-Ionizing Radiation:</strong> Such radiation does not pass through your skin. Excessive non-penetrating radiation could burn your skin similar to sunburns.</p>
