Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia: Lifestyle Changes and Self-Help

Acute lymphocytic leukemia treatment spreads over a long period extending for over two to three years. Normally children or adults undergoing treatment for acute lymphocytic leukemia can go about their usual routine during maintenance phases. Only the initial phase of two to three months is very exhausting.

If leukemia has already spread to brain and spinal cord, it is a difficult and often a fatal situation. Otherwise, acute lymphocytic leukemia is curable in children below ten years of age and adults below fifty years of age. If you do not have specific genetic change called Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphocytic leukemia, if your WBC count is below 50,000 at first diagnosis, and if you go into remission within the first one or one and half months of treatment, you stand a high chance of complete cure of acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Join a support group. You learn from experiences and problems of other people with similar medical condition. This helps you overcome stress associated with acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Seek immediate medical help if your child develops:

– Breathlessness
– High fever
– Cold or flu
– Trouble urinating
– Blood in urine or stool
– Severe diarrhea

If your child’s absolute neutrophil count is less than 1,000, refrain from exposing your child to large groups. However, if count is below 200, child is at high risk of infection and hence he should stay isolated.
