Preventing and Coping with Acute Kidney Failure

It is not possible to predict acute kidney failure. However, simple preventive steps can safeguard your kidneys and manage kidney ailments without allowing them to progress further. These include:

1. If you suffer from any kidney ailments or other medical conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, it is important to undergo regular tests for kidney functioning.

2. If you encounter any problems in urinating or excrete blood with urine, consult a nephrologist immediately.

3. Adhere to a strict and healthy diet preferably as prescribed by your doctor and dietician.

4. Drink sufficient water and other fluids to remain hydrated.

5. Do not take high doses of painkillers like acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen as these precipitate acute kidney failure. This assumes greater importance if you also suffer from high blood pressure or diabetes. Stick to specified dosage of medications as prescribed by your physician.

6. Exercise regularly.

7. Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol.

8. Undergo annual physical examination and urinary tests like urinalysis and blood tests to monitor health of your kidney and urinary tract.

9. If you are aging or suffer from other serious ailments, discuss with your doctor how best to manage your condition. Also, discuss possible side effects of medications you are already taking and whether medications for acute kidney failure would interfere or how effective would they be with other medications.
