Often, you are already hospitalized by the time you develop acute kidney failure. Sometimes, you develop symptoms of kidney problems although not in hospital. Your doctor would then refer you to a nephrologist for detailed diagnostic tests. A physical examination can detect swelling in different body parts due to fluid retention. Doctor uses stethoscope to detect crackling sound in lungs or listen to certain abnormal sounds in the heart.

Acute Kidney Failure: Diagnostic Tests and Procedures

These diagnostic tests include:

Urinalysis: Your urine sample is analyzed through urinalysis to detect specific abnormalities that indicate kidney failure.

Blood Test: This detects levels of creatinine and urea. High levels of both in blood indicate poor functioning of kidney as kidney is unable to filter these substances from blood. This progresses into kidney failure. Arterial blood gas and blood chemistries show metabolic acidosis.

Urine Output: Amount of urine excreted in a day indicates problems of urine retention, poor urine output or oliguria, and similar others.

Imaging Tests: Computerized tomography (CT) and ultrasound tests help doctor view your kidneys and detect swelling or any blockages in urinary tract.

Biopsy: Sometimes, your nephrologist advises removing a sample of your kidney for laboratory analysis. Your doctor inserts a thin needle into kidney through your skin to extract a minute piece of kidney tissue for analysis. This is kidney biopsy.
