<p>Symptoms of Achilles tendonitis develop gradually, sometimes over few days or even few weeks.</p>
<p>Symptoms of Achilles tendonitis include:</p>
<p><strong>Stiffness:</strong> Lower leg region and specifically calf muscles stiffen. Normally stiffness is felt more as soon as you get up in the morning. Stiffness lessens as you start moving around.</p>
<p><strong>Pain:</strong> It starts as a mild pain after exercise. Over time, pain becomes persistent and gradually worsens. It occurs during exercises and continues even thereafter. Sometimes pain is severe and unbearable. Sometimes pain is extremely localized and a burning sensation persists for few hours after exercising. Over time, pain is continuous and occurs even while resting.</p>
<p><strong>Tenderness:</strong> The place where tendon attaches to heel bone is tender to touch. This is felt particularly in the mornings.</p>
<p><strong>Swelling:</strong> Tendon and surrounding region across calf muscles, ankle, and lower leg swell and thicken due to persistent irritation of tendon fibers. Skin could turn red in color.</p>
<p><strong>Creaking Sound:</strong> When ankle is pressed or moved a creaking or crackling sound erupts.</p>
<p><strong>Nodule Formation:</strong> Knots develop near back of leg and along tendon where scar tissue has developed.</p>
<p><strong>Difficulty in Walking:</strong> Pain and swelling make it difficult to walk, rather at time even impossible to move your leg even across small distance. You feel weak in the affected leg. You find it difficult to move around with anything heavy.</p>
