Treatments and Medications

Heart Defects
Surgical treatments are best suited to correct blood circulation and repair heart defects and congenital heart abnormalities.

Hypocalcaemia
Babies and children are given vitamin D and calcium by mouth. In severe cases, bone marrow or fetal thymus tissue transplantation is initiated.

Limited Thymus Gland Function
Such children suffer frequent infections of ear and nose, although it is not very severe. Follow normal schedule of vaccines for best results. In most cases, thymus functions improve with age.

Severe Thymus Dysfunction
In such cases child is extremely vulnerable to infections. In very rare cases where thymus gland is absent, thymus transplantation, transplantation of specialized disease-fighting blood cells or transplantation of specialized cells from bone marrow proves helpful.

Hypoparathyroidism
A low phosphorus diet with vitamin D and calcium supplements can treat this condition. In cases where substantial parathyroid tissue is undamaged, parathyroid glands could later on regulate calcium and phosphorus levels. Otherwise, you need to take these supplements lifelong.

Defective Immune Function
These children should be on low phosphorous diet. Do not give them corticosteroids or immunize them with vaccines made from live viruses. Keep them away from crowds or other sources of possible infections.

Cleft Palate
Surgery can set right this defect and other defects of palate.

Mental Health Care
Adopt psychiatric medications and psychotherapy sessions to treat depressions, deficit or hyperactivity disorders, schizophrenia, and similar mental or behavioral disorders.

Overall Development
Seek early intervention programs offered by local governments. Different therapies like occupational therapy to learn everyday skills, speech therapy to improve verbal skills, developmental therapy to learn age-appropriate behaviors, and similar others help your child tackle developmental problems associated with deletion syndrome.

However, the treatment procedures are specific to every child. They depend on factors like age, extent of disease, medical history, tolerance to specific medications, and overall health.
