Albinism – Diagnostic Tests and Procedures

Genetic testing is the best and most accurate way to diagnose albinism. This testing is specifically helpful if you have a family history of albinism.

Your doctor conducts a thorough physical examination to diagnose condition of your skin and hair. Doctor compares your condition with other close family members. An ophthalmologist examines your eyes to detect potential photophobia, strabismus, and nystagmus. Doctor conducts electroretinogram, a test to measure production of brain waves when light is shined into eyes. This test also indicates presence of misrouted optical nerves.

If ophthalmologist detects only nystagmus as your eye impairment, it could be due to some other medical condition and not albinism.
