Pomegranate is a fruit that is deeply absorbed in history. It presents a discreet class in itself. Apart from being named quite interestingly, pomegranate was grown natively in Iran but then was distributed to many other countries all over the world. Let us find out here the journey of pomegranate.

Pomegranate is indigenous from Iran to the Himalayan regions in north India. It was grown in the hanging gardens of Babylon. The fruit was used in several ways in the ancient days. It was known in ancient Egypt and highlighted in the Egyptian art and mythology. It is praised in the Old Testament of Bible and in the Babylonian Talmud.

Pomegranate was grown and accepted over the entire Mediterranean region since early times. Desert caravans carried pomegranate to the other countries for its thirst-quenching quality of juice.

The fruit traveled to central and southern India from Iran about the first century A.D. It was reported cultivated in Indonesia in 1416. It was then widely distributed and grown throughout India and other dry regions of Southeast Asia. It further went to Malaya, East Indies, and tropical Africa.

The other important regions that accepted pomegranate are Iran, Egypt, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Iraq, Burma, and Saudi Arabia. The commercial orchards for pomegranate can be seen in Israel on the coastal plain and Jordan Valley.

In 1769, the Spanish settlers introduced the tree in California. Today, the dry parts of California and Arizona have grown the pomegranate fruit.

In Bermuda, pomegranate was first recorded reportedly in 1621. It is quite commonly planted since then and has been naturalized. However, pomegranate is seen quite occasionally in the Bahamas, West Indies and warm regions of South and Central America.

Pomegranate is grown mainly in the dry areas of California and Arizona. In California, the commercial cultivation of pomegranate is focused in Tulare, Fresno and Kern counties. One can see the small plantings in Imperial and Riverside counties. With the increase in demand for the fruit, the new plantings were made in the 1960s.

People have learned to grow them at cool altitudes in the midlands of Honduras. In Mexico, pomegranate is planted frequently and even found in the gardens in Hawaii at times.
